Serotonin is a messenger substance that occurs in the body's nervous system (central and peripheral) as well as in platelets and cells in the gastrointestinal tract. It docks to various serotonin receptors and transmits signals/information (neurotransmitter). In our body, serotonin influences emotions, among other things, and therefore it is often referred to as the "happiness hormone". Other functions include regulation of body temperature, appetite, central reward system, mood, motivation and drive, level of consciousness, sleep-wake rhythm, and pain assessment.
