High-dose pills, high active ingredient content in crystalline samples

In 2024, 652 samples declared as MDMA were analyzed at the Zurich Drug Information Center (DIZ). Of these, 344 were pills declared as MDMA. 254 of these were tested as part of the outpatient drug checks at the DIZ, 90 as part of the ten mobile drug checks carried out in the city of Zurich in 2024. In addition, 308 crystalline MDMA samples were submitted to the DIZ for analysis last year. 257 of these were tested as part of outpatient drug checking at the DIZ, 51 as part of the ten mobile drug checking missions.

The detailed MDMA evaluation 2024 can be found in the attached report. These are the most important findings from 2024:

General

- As in previous years, MDMA remains one of the most tested substances. A similar number of crystalline samples and pills were handed in for drug checking.

- Compared to other stimulants, such as amphetamine and cocaine, MDMA contains relatively few unexpected ingredients.

- The majority of the unexpected psychoactive ingredients in both pills and crystalline samples are synthesis by-products.

‍‍‍‍MDMA pills

- The MDMA content in MDMA pills continued to rise. After a slump in the coronavirus years, levels have returned to pre-pandemic levels.

- 92.9 % of all pills tested are high-dose (over 120 mg MDMA per pill).

- More than one in four of all pills tested is even extremely high-dose (over 200 mg MDMA per pill).

- 7% of all pills tested contained an unexpected psychoactive ingredient in addition to or instead of MDMA.

‍MDMA crystals

- As in previous years, the average MDMA content of crystalline samples remains high.

- 8.8 % of all crystalline samples tested contained an unexpected psychoactive ingredient in addition to or instead of MDMA.
