An interdisciplinary team of toxicologistsfrom the Institute of Forensic Medicine and doctorsfrom the Poisoning Information Center at the Freiburg University Medical Center investigated a case of severe intoxication caused by the ingestion of a tablet obtained from the Internet.
The person concerned was expecting a benzodiazepine prodrug. However, toxicological analysis revealed that the tablet contained the synthetic opioid cyclorphine. Cyclorphine is a highly potent synthetic opioid that has hardly been pharmacologically researched to date. It has a strong effect on the central nervous system, although the exact effect in humans cannot be reliably assessed. Even small amounts can lead to serious health complications. Due to the severity of the symptoms, intensive medical treatment was required.
