In recent months, there has been an increase in cases of samples declared as 3-MMC (meow meow) or 4-MMC (mephedrone, mephi) in European drug checking services, which instead contain other, significantly more potent cathinones. Two alleged 3-MMC samples that consisted exclusively of NEP and alpha-PVP were also recently tested at DIZ Zurich.
Currently, approx. 70% of the samples declared as 3-MMC in the DIZ Zurich contain other substances. Instead of the expected 3-MMC, N-ethylpentedrone (NEP), alpha-PVP or other cathinones such as 2-MMC are often found. The false declarations are not limited to Switzerland: drug-checking services in Belgium and France report similar cases.
The main risk of misdeclaration lies in the large differences in dosage. While cathinones such as 2-MMC, 3-MMC or 4-MMC are typically consumed in swallowed doses of 100-200mg, 20-50mg swallowed is already an active dose for the substance NEP - this corresponds to a 3-5 times higher potency. With alpha-PVP, as little as 5-15mg swallowed is effective, which means that a habitual 3-MMC dose can lead to a massive and potentially life-threatening overdose. These extreme differences in potency can be explained by the different pharmacological properties of the substances.
N-Ethylpentedrone (NEP) differs from 3-MMC not only in its potency, but also in its duration of action. Studies show that NEP has an elimination half-life of almost 13 hours, while 3-MMC is broken down much faster. This means that the doses consumed overlap and can therefore lead to unintentional overdoses. NEP mainly acts on dopamine and noradrenaline systems, while 3-MMC also acts on serotonin. This means that NEP produces pure stimulation without the empathic effects of 3-MMC.
Alpha-PVP, also known as flakka, poses additional risks. The substance has been linked to several deaths and psychotic episodes throughout Europe. When swallowed, alpha-PVP has a maximum effect after just 40 minutes and produces more intense effects than other cathinones. As a highly potent dopamine reuptake inhibitor, it can trigger extreme euphoria, but also persecutory fears and aggressive behavior. According to user reports, it leads to a compulsive craving in many users and increases the risk of overdosing.
The reason for this development probably lies in the current legal situation. 3-MMC and 4-MMC are now controlled or banned in many European countries. Manufacturers are switching to substances that are still unregulated in the respective countries, such as NEP.
- substances before consumption: Especially with cathinones such as 3-MMC or 4-MMC, false declarations are currently very common. Drug checking is currently more important than ever for cathinones. If no drug checking is available, always start with a quarter of the usual dosage. Wait at least 2 hours before topping up.
- Stop if there is an unusual effect: If a supposed 3-MMC dose feels different - too strong, too long, or with unusual side effects - it may be a different substance. Topping up only makes it riskier.
- Take longer breaks between topping up: Wait at least 3-4 hours before vaping, even if the effect seems to be wearing off. NEP has a very long-lasting effect in the body and accumulates with repeated use.
- Take warning signals seriously: In the event of severe overheating, palpitations or the onset of negative thoughts and fears of persecution, stop using immediately. If symptoms are severe, get medical help (144).
- Reagent tests alone are not enough: Home tests can detect cathinones, but usually cannot distinguish between 3-MMC, NEP or alpha-PVP. A positive cathinone test may give a false sense of security.
